1. The Short Answer: Substrate, Coating and Adhesive

A screen protector is usually a laminated system rather than one uniform sheet. At minimum, it needs a protective substrate and a way to attach that substrate to the display. Higher-specification products add surface coatings, optical functions and extra support layers.

2. Tempered and Strengthened Glass

Tempered glass screen protectors use a thin processed-glass substrate. Glass can be strengthened through controlled thermal treatment or chemical ion exchange. Corning’s glass-manufacturing overview explains that thermal tempering uses heating and rapid cooling, while chemical strengthening uses ion exchange to create a tougher surface.

The glass sheet is only one part of the protector. Edge grinding, tempering consistency, adhesive coverage, printing, thickness and surface coating all influence the finished result. A smooth glass surface normally gives a familiar touch feel and strong everyday scratch resistance, but it remains rigid and can crack when it absorbs an impact.

3. PET Polyester Film

PET means polyethylene terephthalate, a polyester that can be manufactured as a thin, clear and dimensionally stable film. Optical PET grades are not interchangeable with ordinary packaging film. Toray’s optical PET information describes high-transparency grades designed for low haze, smoothness and adhesion treatment, including touch-panel applications.

In screen protection, PET is commonly used where thin construction, clean die-cutting and cost control matter. Because it is relatively firm but still flexible, it works well on compatible flat surfaces and as a carrier or support layer inside some laminates. Its scratch performance depends heavily on the hard coat; an uncoated PET substrate should not be assumed to perform like a coated finished protector.

4. TPU and Other Flexible Polyurethane Films

TPU means thermoplastic polyurethane. It is a family of flexible materials rather than one fixed formulation. TPU film can be engineered for different combinations of clarity, elasticity, hardness, abrasion behavior, weathering and processing. Flexible polyurethane-based protectors can conform to curves and irregular shapes that are difficult for rigid glass. They are also suitable for on-demand cutting systems covering many device models. The trade-offs can include a softer touch, more installation sensitivity and performance that varies substantially with the hard coat, adhesive and exact film formulation.

5. Is Hydrogel a Material?

In the screen protector market, “hydrogel” is usually a product-category term, not a guaranteed chemical identity. A seller may use it for TPU-based film or for another multilayer flexible construction promoted for conformability and recovery from light surface marks. The name alone does not reveal the substrate, coating or adhesive.

6. What Is a Ceramic Screen Protector Made Of?

“Ceramic screen protector” can refer to more than one construction. Some premium products use transparent glass-ceramic containing microscopic crystalline phases. Other products sold as ceramic use flexible hybrid film, a coated polymer stack or a ceramic-related surface treatment. These products do not have the same bend, breakage or scratch behavior.

The practical rule is simple: ask whether the substrate is glass-ceramic, strengthened glass, PET, TPU or another composite. Then request the layer structure and test method. 7. Adhesive and Release-Liner Materials

A protector must make uniform optical contact with the display while remaining installable and removable. Common systems use pressure-sensitive adhesive or an optically clear adhesive layer. The adhesive may be coated across the full surface or only around selected areas. Some curved-screen systems use a separate liquid optical adhesive that is cured with UV light after alignment.

Optical adhesive is a technical material in its own right. 3M’s display-bonding resources show that optically clear adhesives are engineered for clarity, adhesion, durability and different display constructions. In a removable protector, the selected adhesive also needs controlled peel, low residue and stable edges.

The liner seen before installation is not part of the finished protector. It protects the adhesive during converting, packing and handling, then peels away before the protector is applied.

8. Surface Coatings and Optical Functions

The top layer often explains why two protectors made from the same base material feel different. An oleophobic or anti-smudge coating lowers surface energy so oils are easier to wipe away and finger movement feels smoother. A hard coat can improve the abrasion resistance of a polymer film. Neither term tells you how long the treatment will last under actual cleaning and use.

Material choice should follow the intended device and risk. A rigid glass protector may be appropriate for a flat phone screen, while a flexible film may be safer for a curved surface, an on-demand cutting program or a compatible foldable outer display. Never apply a protector to a foldable inner screen unless the device maker permits replacement and the product is designed for that exact display.

10. How to Verify What a Protector Is Made Of

  1. Request the layer stack. Record the top coat, functional layer, substrate, adhesive and total thickness.
  2. Identify the substrate. Do not accept only “hydrogel,” “ceramic,” “9D” or “nano” as the material name.
  3. Match every claim to a method. Ask whether 9H refers to a pencil-hardness coating test, which load and standard were used, and which production lot was tested.
  4. Measure optical performance. Compare visible-light transmission, haze, color and screen brightness on the exact device.
  5. Test the adhesive system. Check bubbles, edge lift, dwell behavior, residue and clean removal after aging.
  6. Test fit and interaction. Verify sensor openings, edge gestures, cases and under-display fingerprint response where applicable.
  7. Retain an approved sample. Use it as the physical reference for production inspection.

11. Common Questions

Are screen protectors made of plastic or glass?

Both are common. Rigid protectors typically use processed glass, while film protectors commonly use PET or flexible polyurethane-based material. Multilayer products may combine more than one material.

What is a tempered glass screen protector made of?

It uses a thin processed-glass sheet plus adhesive and usually a top coating. Some constructions also include printing, a support or anti-shatter layer and removable liners used during production and installation.

Is hydrogel made from TPU?
